Choose Your Word

A single word is your North Star for the year.

Creating specific goals for your business or personal life are important, but checking and following through on what we hoped to achieve is challenging. A single word is your context for the year.

Last year, I walked through the specifics on goal-setting and choosing a word. You can read all the details in this post. In short, I recommend creating goals in different categories of your life. Then, you summarize those specific goals into a purpose, outcome and theme for the year.

This theme leads you directly to your word. The one mantra you can hang above your desk to keep you centered throughout the year.

The Year of Consistency

With those lessons in mind, 2015 for me is all about continuing momentum.

Foundations have been built, but unless they are built upon, I will continually be starting form scratch. I want to work smarter this year by focusing on what is already working.
  • In my community, we will work to consistency host and improve our 1 Million Cups events and TEDx events to connect residents to spur ideas and pride in our city.
  • In my business, we will consistently focus on our digital marketing services, especially in the manufacturing and automotive industries. Writing will consistently find new ways to inspire readers to build the businesses and communities they want to be a part of.
  • In my personal life, a consistent schedule and attention will help as my wife finishes her midwifery residency and will keep me grounded and in touch with the most important job of my life.
My word for 2015 is: CONSISTENCY. I hope that this will point me in the right direction as the year progresses.

What’s Your Word?

Think about a word that summarizes your hopes/goals/resolutions for the new year. Tell your friends and family, write it somewhere visible and remember it throughout the year.

As I look back at 2014, I am reminded of a lesson I mention ever year. You can achieve much more than you thought possible with small, consistent action.

Your word will help you do just this.
